For Deann René, songwriting provides her with the space to express her emotions, taking inspiration from her personal life and finding answers in the creative process of writing songs and making music. 'Hear Her Cry' follows the same path. The song was inspired by someone close to her going through a particularly dark time during the Christmas holiday. "Her marriage was ending on Christmas. It happened years ago, but she still felt the pain and has every year", explains Deann René. "She was having a very hard time one year, about being so lonely and that's when I started writing the song."
'Hear Her Cry' begins with the strum of an acoustic guitar, while an ambient electric guitar floats above. 'Getting through another holiday, she tries to put a smile on her face' sings Deann René's voice, as she weaves a story of heartbreak. The tender thump of a kick drum joins the arrangement, alongside the addition of hi-hats, which elevates the rising pre-chorus. Deann René's soulful voice cuts into a chorus, filled with beautiful harmonies and powerful vocal deliveries, as she sings 'Sometimes I wonder if you can hear her cry', a mesmerizing moment that lingers on 'cry.'
A delicate guitar solo drops into a middle 8, that brings dynamics and intimacy to the track. The sprinkle of piano, the roll of the drums and the warmth of the guitar leave space for the vocals. The strum of an acoustic guitar underneath is guided by crescendoing vocals, before the whole band kicks in for an emotive finale. Despite the sorrowful sentiment of the song, there's hope and love in the performance.
Deann René's road to music has been a challenging one. Growing up in a household with musical parents, her childhood was surrounded by the joys of music. She spent her free time learning piano and the clarinet and hoped to spend her life creating music. However, during her early adult years, she was suppressed from doing the things she loved and being her true self. It was the birth of her son, which became the catalyst for the return of a music career, deciding it was time to put her music out into the world.
Thanks to her music revival, Deann René has gone from strength to strength, performing on TV and radio shows throughout Texas, as she began writing and releasing her own music again. Recently performing on Songwriters Across Texas. 'Paint A Dream' will be her latest album, encompassing a story of love, loss and hope.
